Is there such a thing as cold power? This is a question that has crossed my mind several times this year. Over the past few years I have been taking a cold shower every day and I believe it is one of the very best ways to start the day. So why keep this secret from other people. One thing that has puzzled me about cold showers is that, if they are so good, why isn’t everyone talking about them.
NO MATTER HOW COLD, IT’S A COLD SHOWER
Every day no matter how cold it is I start my day with a cold shower. I live in Kathu, Northern Cape where the temperatures sometimes get as low as 0 degrees. In fact over the past few days our temperatures have dipped to -5 degrees which is really cold. Even on such cold days I still take my cold shower.
I have been doing this for the past three or four years and I have just missed a few days of cold showers which have been an exception really. I have missed not more than 4 days in the past 3 years.
FEEL ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC AFTER EVERY COLD SHOWER
I feel so refreshed, so powered up, so energised, so supercharged after every cold shower. The other day I was thinking if there was some way to patent these cold showers I’d be a really rich guy. I guess companies don’t talk about cold showers because how do you make any money from that? 🤣 If you are a shower and cold water, you are good to go.
STOPPED THE COFFEE ROUTINE
At some stage I used to take a strong coffee for an energy boost in the morning. I need a really strong coffee for that energy in the morning and would be lost without it. With cold showers I dropped the coffee altogether.. I felt so energised. I don’t need the strong coffee effect anymore. Now I just drink cold water or tea in the morning.
STARTED OUT AS AN EXPERIMENT
I started cold showers as an experiment some years ago after reading about it somewhere that it could be really beneficial. I really wanted to find out if they worked. Could they really be as good as the claims had it. I had read that they had all kinds of benefits but I wanted to find out for myself. I could not find anyone who had taken the cold showers long enough. Since I started taking cold showers I have not looked back.
BUT YOU’VE GOT TO BE NUTS
I think you have to be nuts to take cold showers in this freezing weather (we are just coming of Winter at the time of writing this article) but I tick that box nicely so I’m sorted. No jokes friends I’m a little bit nuts.🙈🙊
GENERALLY GOOD HEALTH
I was reflecting on the cold showers and realised that since I have been taking them, I’m generally in very good health. I’ve been seriously sick about 5 days in total over the past 4 years and hardly ever take medication of any kind. Perhaps it is just my good fortune, diet, fitness and the Grace of God. I do think these cold showers have something to do with it. As a youngster I used to frequent the doctor’s surgery. I could go to the doctor as often as 10 to 20 times in one year. That is how bad it was.
BUILDING UP RESISTANCE TO THE COLD
I am much less prone to episodes of depression or when I’m feeling really low. This has been my personal experience. I’m willing to bet with anyone that you just cannot get depressed during an ice cold shower. Maybe afterwards you will but not during the actual shower itself. Let me know if you decide to take up my bet. Tell me how it goes. I don’t feel as cold as I used to. I feel I’ve built some resistance to the cold. As a child winter was such a miserable season for me with chilblains and swollen fingers. Now I just say BRING ON THE COLD! I’m ready!
I honestly feel like a superhero during a cold shower. This is no joke. Lately I’ve been feeling like the Black Panther or even my favourite superhero Superman. You feel like you are on top of the world. It is a totally awesome feeling you can achieve absolutely anything in the world. This is not just a short-lived thing. It takes you through the morning.
In the past I used to take quick short showers less than 4 minutes. Now I’ve made them longer. I want to absorb the cold. I want to take it all in instead of just doing a quick in and out.
WINTER NOW MY BEST SEASON
Because of the cold I used to hate winter but now I love winter. I feel the benefits of cold showers are multiplied and amplified in winter. This is my experience. I feel so much sharper in winter compared to other warmer seasons when one can feel a bit lethargic in the heat.
BUT WAIT A MINUTE, WHAT ABOUT EVIDENCE
Now here’s the thing ladies and gentlemen, I cannot prove that some of these benefits have come about as a result of cold showers. You will just have to take my word for it. It’s a trust thing. Try it out for a week or two and let’s see how it goes for you. I would love to hear from you.
THE COLD SHOWER RITUAL
Before I take the cold shower I stand and just breathe deeply. Then I hold my breath for as long as I can (I don’t always hold my breath! I don’t do this all the time though. Sometimes I just get in an take a cold shower. There is nothing to think really). Then I turn on the water at full blast and have the most awesome start. The first minute is probably the coldest but after a few minutes in the shower my body is already adapting. By the end of the shower I could almost fly to Krypton and back.
AM I EVER TEMPTED TO TAKE A HOT SHOWER?
To be really honest the answer to that is No! I have been taking cold showers for so long now that I don’t feel I have a choice anymore. It is no longer a choice for me. It is something I do and a part of my life. I guess this is just the power of habit.
WARNING: COLD SHOWERS ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE. YOU CAN GO INTO SHOCK IF IT’S TOO SUDDEN. If you are prone to frostbite please stay away from cold showers.
If you want to get into cold showers maybe ease into it. You can just go from hot water to warm water and gradually reduce the temperature. I just went cold turkey this is generally my approach when I try out things.
So friends, I ask again. Is there such a thing as cold power? I think so.
