What’s your game plan?

One of the things I realised when playing #chess is that you always need a game plan! I’ve lost many games because I lacked a plan.

GAME PLAN – KEEP IT SIMPLE
A game plan can be as simple as: this is what I need to do to make progress in this game. I need to get my king to safety or I need more space for my pieces. It can even be as simple as, I need to develop my pieces.

STICK TO THE GAME PLAN
Winning the game is not a random event but a coordinated process from one move to another. Winning is really a well executed game plan! Yes sometimes you can win without a game plan but this is really the exception.

EVOLVING GAME PLAN
The game plan is not cast in stone. It changes and evolves as the game proceeds. The game plan grows with the game.

WHY THE GAME PLAN IS IMPORTANT
The game plan is important. It provides a road map to victory. It guides you and helps you find moves in any given position. So if my king is exposed in the game, I spend the next few moves trying to improve that. When I achieve safety for the king, the game plan changes. Now maybe it becomes I need to attack the opponent’s game.

AVOID JUST MOVING
One bad thing that can happen in a game of chess is you lose focus and just play a move. You play a move just for the sake of moving. The move does not fit in game plan. It’s just a move and it sticks out like a sore thumb. A random move can throw a spanner in the works of a good position. It can undo all the progress you have made.

SO WHAT’S THE GAME PLAN
Ladies and gentlemen, what’s your game plan today? What is your focus for the day? And the game plan for the week, month and year? It’s better to have a bad game plan than no plan at all.

TAKE CARE OF THE GAME PLAN
The game plan keeps you in the game!  Take care of the game plan and the plan will take care of you. But you don’t want to just stay in the game. You don’t want to just push wood. You want to thrive. You want to win.
